5G – The Next Generation of Wireless, Explained.

In the first of a series of articles written by our very own Professor Robert Gardiner, we aim to explain what the Next Generation Network will be, our expectations and what it means for the future.

What is 5G?

The term 5G will mean many things to many people. The previous generations have evolved through needs for security, speed and bandwidth, 5G will be no different. Some have referred to 5G as the ‘network of networks’ and the rationale behind this is clear; 5G will be an amalgam of technologies. The expression Ubiquitous Networks and Heterogeneous are key words and very much at the forefront of technology. The spread of spectrum across the bands from relatively low frequencies in the UHF band through to centri-metric and milli-metric allocations will be used. New antenna design, Massive MIMO and beam forming antennas will aid the efficiency of the networks.

5G will truly shape the ‘always on’ networks of tomorrow

Therefore, 5G is about to deliver realistic, exciting promises and expectations for our connected world. 5G will invariable mean higher speeds >10Gbps throughput, ultra low latency, and denser networks, (there may be as many as 200,000 base stations in London alone).

The three drivers for 5G are:

New Business Models. The network operators are constantly seeking new ways of generating profit from their networks and of course 5G will open up additional capacity.

Consumer demand. Subscribers are demanding greater bandwidth as video streaming, AR, P-2-P gaming and other bandwidth-intensive services come on stream.

Limitless Opportunities. A brand-new generation of applications – from AI, VR, the IoT and driverless cars will soon be common use.

With very recent freezing of release 15 the industry is certainly moving in the right direction, release 16 should be ratified in Q3 2019 and we are poised for a fully-fledged 5G rollout in 2020 by the it is envisaged that 20 billion devices could be connected to the internet.

As with all previous generations the primary step in defining the rolling out of 5G will be to ensure that it can accommodate and handle the ever-increasing demand for growth, the capability to deliver on the vision to interconnect machines to the cloud simultaneously and supporting low-latency use cases, striking the balance between these two needs is crucial to making the 3GPP standards work.

The unlocking of 5G potential will provide the convergence of wireline and wireless with dark fibre penetration to support a variety of 5G cases.
